A Selfish World
In the corner of a dark street
There sat a homeless boy
Food and clothes had none
And no passer-by would even give him a toy
On the railway station
There roamed a girl who sold fruit
But not one customer paid her the proper price
And to their numerous insults she had to remain mute
In the noisy market place
There lived a dog who had lost his leg
Beaten and trashed it was everyday
And it was never given food even if it would beg
On the roof of the tea shop
There was a man with sadness great
For he had been kicked out of his one house
And had since known only hate
All of these people and many more too
Suffer due to our behaviour
Of thinking only and only about ourselves
And considering other inferior
We live in a selfish world
Where cruelty is an ocean and kindness a small lake
But whining gets us nowhere
For an action we must take.
